Ambassador of France to Georgia: „Sokhumi State University is always in my heart“
His
Excellency, Mr. Diego Colas, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the French Republic to Georgia, visited Sokhumi State University accompanied
by his entourage. The esteemed guests were warmly received by the Rector,
Professor Zurab Khonelidze, the Head of the Administration, Professor Nino
Tophuridze, and the Head of the International Relations and Intercultural
Communications Service, Professor Indira Dzagania. During the visit, the
delegation toured the university, explored the French literature collection in
the library, and graciously presented new books as gifts.
Discussions
during the meeting delved into the rich cultural and educational relations
between Georgia and France. The Rector provided an insightful overview of
Sokhumi State University's history, expounded on the essence of university
diplomacy, and highlighted Georgia's illustrious past. Noteworthy events, such
as those during the era of Davit Agmashenebeli, were emphasized, where
collaborative efforts with European representatives laid the foundation for
subsequent processes in Europe. An illustrative example was drawn from the
coalition-building and mutual military assistance during that time, echoing the
principles enshrined in Article 5 of the NATO Treaty in the contemporary era.
Additionally, the Rector touched upon the golden age of King Tamar and the
concept of the "Darbazi - hall" as a historical parliament.
In
his response, the Ambassador of France expressed his delight in performing a
diplomatic mission in Georgia—a state endowed with a rich historical past and a
unique culture. He wholeheartedly endorsed the principles of Georgia's
territorial integrity, emphasizing the unity of the country and a steadfast
policy of non-recognition. Against this backdrop, the significance of
university diplomacy gained prominence at Sokhumi State University. The French
diplomat recalled his introduction to Sokhumi State University during the
"Baltic Chain" event in September 2019 and conveyed that the
university has since held a special place in his heart. "Since then,
Sokhumi State University is always in my heart," stated the Ambassador.
Expressing
a desire for friendship and support, the Ambassador acknowledged the university
as an ideal venue for the development of university diplomacy. An agreement was
reached for the translation of the upcoming monograph on university diplomacy,
authored by Z. Khonelidze, into French. Additionally, the concept of organizing
a Georgian-French international online conference on the theme "University
Diplomacy as a New Georgian Paradigm of Peace" was conceived.
In
an effort to promote the restoration of Georgian-Abkhazian relations, Mr. D.
Colas proposed Sokhumi State University's participation in a French-German
international project. Furthermore, plans were unveiled for the establishment
of a French culture center at the university, named after Mrs. Rusudan Gachava.
This initiative aims to further enhance cultural exchange and collaboration
between the two nations.
