Celebration of Bulgaria's National Holiday at Sokhumi State University
On
November 1, 2021, Sokhumi State University together with the Bulgarian Embassy celebrated
national holiday of Bulgaria - "National Awakening Day."
The
event welcomed the acting ambassador of Bulgaria to Georgia, Mr. Ilia Nechev,
embassy representatives, and Bulgarians residing in Georgia.
Professor
Zurab Khonelidze, the Rector of Sokhumi State University, extended his
congratulations to the guests on Bulgaria's national holiday. He underscored
the significance of the enduring friendship between Georgia and Bulgaria,
emphasizing its historical importance in both regional relations and public
culture. Additionally, Professor Khonelidze expressed gratitude to the
Bulgarian parliament for recognizing and supporting Sokhumi State University.
Professor
Indira Dzagania, Head of the Foreign Relations and Intercultural Connections
Service at SSU, also extended her congratulations to the Bulgarian guests. She
highlighted the projects implemented at SSU with the support of the Bulgarian
Embassy and discussed their future prospects.
Thanks
to Bulgaria's support, a special auditorium was opened at Sokhumi State
University. In this space, a free Bulgarian language course is conducted by Ms.
Ivana Petkova, a teacher specially invited by the Bulgarian Embassy. The course
has gained popularity among students.
On
the occasion of the "Day of National Awakening," Ms. Petkova
delivered a report on the Bulgarian revival of the 19th century.
It's
noteworthy that the longstanding and amicable relationship between Georgia and
Bulgaria traces back centuries. The Petritsoni (Bachkovo) Monastery in Bulgaria
stands as one of the oldest Orthodox monasteries in Europe, founded in the 11th
century by the Georgian brothers, the Bakurianisdze.
