2022-03-31

On March 31, 2022, Professor Zurab Khonelidze, the esteemed rector of Sokhumi State University, presented his latest monograph, "Georgian Paradigm of Peace," at the library of the Technical University of Georgia. This event held particular significance, coinciding with the birthday of the first president of independent Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, and the anniversary of the referendum on the restoration of Georgia's independence. The monograph, described by specialists as "a desk book for the settlement of ongoing conflicts in Georgia and the restoration of the country's territorial integrity," introduces a fresh perspective on peacebuilding in the region. The work is divided into two parts: "University Diplomacy" and "South Caucasus Geopolitical Space."

In the first section, "University Diplomacy," Professor Khonelidze explores the role of the contemporary higher education system in the pursuit of peace. Drawing inspiration from the new EU action platform, he introduces the concept of university diplomacy, a groundbreaking approach to modern peacebuilding. This signifies a paradigm shift in education policy, suggesting that universities can play a pivotal role in fostering peace and redefining international relations and diplomacy.

The event commenced with the opening remarks and a warm welcome from Professor Davit Gurgenidze, the Rector of the Technical University of Georgia. In his address, he highlighted the significance of Professor Zurab Khonelidze's work, "Georgian Paradigm of Peace," emphasizing not only its theoretical depth but also its practical value. Professor Gurgenidze pointed out that the monograph showcases the potential for tangible change, steering towards peaceful coexistence with other nations and countries. He underscored the relevance of this work to the present situation and, by extension, its impact on the future trajectory of the Georgian state.

The presentation was skillfully guided by the well-known Georgian journalist and public figure, Mr. Nugzar Rukhadze. According to his insightful assessment, "Georgian Paradigm of Peace" is a work that places a strong emphasis on universal values rooted in humanism, encompassing education, science, and the empowerment of youth. Mr. Rukhadze expressed that the concept of "University Diplomacy" introduced by Professor Zurab Khonelidze represents a groundbreaking approach for the peaceful resolution of conflicts within the country. He stressed that this innovative perspective is something every politician should seriously take into consideration.

The unveiling of "Georgian Paradigm of Peace" sparked considerable interest among the audience, leading to a series of pertinent questions posed to the author. In response, Professor Zurab Khonelidze clarified that the primary objective of his work is to present a non-conventional perspective and a robust state position anchored in newfound knowledge. To shed light on the essence of the concept of "University Diplomacy," Professor Khonelidze underscored its core principles. The idea revolves around the synergy of two fundamental commandments: firstly, the emphasis on a non-standard vision, and secondly, the cultivation of a strong state position grounded in contemporary knowledge. According to him, these elements form the cornerstone of the proposed approach. The significance of forming the South Caucasus as a peaceful space is integral to Professor Khonelidze's vision. He envisions a region characterized by harmony, cooperation, and mutual understanding. The proposed strategies aim to contribute to the deepening and development of social and intercultural relations. In practical terms, these approaches are designed to yield tangible benefits for parties involved in conflicts. By fostering a shift in mindset and actively engaging in transformative actions, the proposed ideas aim to change the world around us for the better. Professor Khonelidze envisions a positive impact on social dynamics, cultural exchanges, and the overall well-being of communities, ultimately creating a more harmonious and peaceful environment.

The critical evaluation of "Georgian Paradigm of Peace" involves a diverse panel of reviewers comprising both Georgian and international specialists, researchers, and diplomats of the highest international caliber. This multi-faceted review process ensures a comprehensive and globally informed assessment of the monograph's significance and contribution to the discourse on peacebuilding.
